Drax Castle was one of the last 'adulterene castle' destroyed by King Stephen before he died in 1154, and Henry II came to the English throne, accompanied by Geoffrey Drax, the earliest known family member. The site of the 12th century Drax Castle has, what appears to be a far earlier rare square Saxon Moat, at the centre of which now is a Victorian house.
