Understanding a photo with a name, with the help of ancestry.co.uk.

This is an interesting photo of a woman on a hunter with two dogs by woodland belonging to the Bayons Manor estate; but who was she?

The back of this early photographic postcard is stamped with, "Starbuck, Photographer, Market Rasen," and the name "Connie Nelson" is written in pencil. The signpost shows the directions of, "Tealby", "Market Rasen" & "Walesby" in Lincolnshire. There is a notice on a tree behind the signpost, which reads, "All persons found trespassing in this plantation will be prosecuted, Bayons Manor, Nov. 1897." The Bayons Manor Estate at Tealby is nearby; she was probably a member of the local Hunt there.

These are the only clues yet, with a bit of careful thought and the help of ancestry.co.uk, a great deal more can be discovered in about two hours; the following is the result of such research - remember this only took about two hours with membership of ancestry.co.uk:

Lizzie Constance Nelson ('Connie', 'Conny') was born about 2.9.1870 at Kettleby Thorpe, Lincs., the daughter of John & Lucy Nelson. (GRO birth ref: Sep. 1870. Nelson. Lizzie Constance. Caistor. 7a.615) She never married. She died in 1959 at Horncastle, Lincs., aged 88. (GRO death ref: Mar. 1959. Nelson. Lizzie C. Horncastle. 3b.337, aged 88) [These GRO references could be used to order the relevant certificates at £9.50 from the General Register Office at, gro.gov.uk]

When this photo was taken, at some time after the 1897 notice was posted, she was probably living at Red House, Walesby, Lincs., where she was working as the 'housekeeper' in 1901 - see below.

Her parents, John Nelson (born about John Nelson 1832/3 at Barnetby-le-Wold, Lincs.) and Lucy Bostock (GRO birth ref: Dec.1838. Bostock. Lucy. Glanford Brigg. 14.333), were married in 1860 in Glanford Brigg District, Lincolnshire. (GRO marriage ref: Dec. 1860. Nelson. John. Glanford Brigg. 7a.1255; married Lucy Bostock)

They had the following children:
i. John Bostock Nelson, born about 1863/4 at Wrawby, Lincs. (GRO birth ref: Sep. 1863. Nelson. John Bostock. Glanford Brigg. 7a.595)
ii. Annie Sophia Nelson, born about 1866/7 at Wrawby, Lincs. (GRO birth ref: Sep. 1866. Nelson. Annie S. Glanford Brigg. 7a.580)
iii. Edith Lucy Nelson, born about 1868/9 at Kettleby Thorpe, Lincs. (GRO birth ref: Dec. 1868. Nelson. Edith Lucy. Caistor. 7a.602)
